Shake the Boot

Friday 13th November 2009

Crews of Fire-fighters, members of the Australian Professional Fire-Fighters Foundation (APFF), nurses, friends, and local identities were out hitting the pubs and clubs of Adelaide and Regional centres encouraging South Australians to lighten their pockets and purses of loose change by placing it in a fire-fighters boot.

All money raised in the Adelaide area will go to the Newland Ward (Burns Unit) of the Women's and Children's Hospital. Following discussions with the administration of the hospital, it has been decided that a room attached to the Newland ward is in desperate need of an overhaul. The cost of this renovation will be in the vicinity of $100,000. The APFF has already embarked on this fundraising campaign and so far raised $50,000 towards this project. This head start has been achieved through money collected via voluntary contributions from fire-fighters pay packets each fortnight. The APFF are hoping that with generous public support the target of $100,000 can be reached.

Money collected in regional areas will stay within the community, with all donations being directed to local charities. Country hospitals and many community groups have benefited from funds raised through previous ‘SHAKE THE BOOT®’ fundraising campaigns.

Previous fundraising endeavours have resulted in much needed equipment being purchased for the hospital. In February 2009 in response to the devastating Victorian bushfires, members of the APFF along with families and friends conducted a one off ‘SHAKE THE BOOT®’. The humbling generosity of the general public to this event was overwhelming. The amazing total of $200,000 was raised in one day and was gratefully accepted by the Red Cross appeal.
